Gaming Cliches

I don't like posting twice on the same day, but something has been bugging me all day and I need to write it down before I forget.

I love playing video games. If you picture me sitting down, covered in glitter, playing Nintendogs on my pink DS while chatting with my "girl friends"* on my cell phone, that picture of me exists only in your mind.

But that is not quite the topic here. I was reading video-game related lists today when I found one titled something like "Top 10 games not to play with your boyfriend". Many of the games were shooters or other "gAmEz FoR bOiZ!1!1!1!!!"

There is one major problem with the list, that hurts the anti-sexist in me.

It is the problem that girls should in every way please their boyfriend. Your boyfriend wants to win? Let him win! Flatter his ego, girls! After all, you're just a silly pretty thing: we all know that he is far more intelligent and skilled than you

When I read the list, I have the feeling that, while I can be good at video games, I must not make my boyfriend feel inferior, that would be terribly bad. I should feel guilty to be winning and purposefully play less well than my skills allow, for his very own pleasure. After all, what am I beside a machine made to please him? "Beer!" Sure, honey, here it comes! "I am the best!" Of course, honey, you are the best!

If your get into arguments because your boyfriend (or girlfriend) doesn't like that you are winning over video games, s/he has anger management issues. When I see someone I love succeeding in something, I'm happy, even if that person just so happens to have beaten me to something. And there are games I'm good at. Woo, big deal. Come on, boys, be angry at me. Girls must not be good at video games, after all.

* I'm attracted to girls among others, and the term "girl friends" is something I never use to refer to my female friends.

Scruffy in Montreal

Perhaps you have read (and seen) about Jem's Mr. Scruffy (except she writes it without a period after the "Mr". Stoopid British).

Well, trust me, that cat looks like a king compared to my Scruffy. No Mr., because he certainly doesn't look like a gentleman (or a lady). I don't know his gender, he doesn't seem very keen on being taken.

Scruffy first showed up a few weeks ago, I'd say sometime in May. He has short/mid-length gray hair and generally just looks like a cat. But not just about any cat. The first time I saw him, I thought he had just gotten into a fight. His fur feels odd, kind of dirty, and towards the end of his back (near his tail), it's all...how to say...Well, it's scruffy. The scruffiest fur I've ever seen, except on some obese cats that are unable to wash themselves everywhere.

He might very well have fleas and ceiling cat knows what else. I don't let him in, although I suspect he did come in once, running away when I moved. I saw a flash of grayness running out.

My cat doesn't do much. When I pet him, she stares at him with her big eyes. "Mommy, just what are you doing?" She doesn't hiss at him, but she practically never hisses anyway. I think I've seen her do it a grand total of one time since I got her, and it was aimed at my roommate. The bastard had dared approaching her highness. Although, you never know, it might be because he was only wearing a towel around his waist and she was afraid of what might happen.

I feed Scruffy sometimes. I put a bowl with some dry food when I see him, and he eats it happily. He looks very thin. When I pet him (he loves being petted, above all around his head), I can feel his bones.

If I was very rich, I'd take him to the vet, but that would probably require me to get him inside first. I can't really tell the vet that I'll just show up whenever the cat comes here. Except for emergencies, like when my cat fell off the roof, there's about one month of wait between the time you take your appointment and the time of the actual appointment. For example, I had to call about one month ago for an appointment this week.

But the difficulty of getting an appointment is not the main put off. The biggest problem I have is the price. As I said, he could very well have some diseases. I also have no idea of whether he has been sterilized and vaccinated. I just don't have the money to pay for all that. If you do however, you can leave me a note and I'll see to contacting you. ;)

Changed the Theme

I just changed the theme (again, yes, but I hadn't changed it for some time).

As I can't fiddle around with the code as I want, I have to use widgets. However, there is no widget to display only top-level pages. You have to display all of them, and you can exclude those you don't want displayed. I would love if there was some way to do the opposite: enter the pages I want instead of those I don't want. It's not necessarily visible, but what with things like my joined fanlistings, I have tons of pages.

Anyway, apart from that things should be fine. The only annoyance is the list of monthly archives that goes on forever, but that's what you get for blogging for such a long period of time.

Crazy and Alone

Fear not, it's not going to be an emo post about how terrible life is.

Today was the last day of my group therapy. I have mixed feelings about that. On one hand, I know I have done some progress. Going there has helped me and they gave me tons of useful documents. On the other hand, the emotional side kicks in. I enjoyed going there, it was a good moment of the week. I liked the other people who attended, as well as the two therapists.

In life, pretty much everything comes down to money. There were now only three of us attending the group on a regular basis, with a fourth one who was practically never showing up. The group was put to an end because it's not enough. They aim for about 8 to 10 people per group.

I could always go into another group but I spoke with my therapist about the group ending and we agreed that I wouldn't need to continue. That's mostly because I'm starting a therapy to cure my phobias. And, trust me, this is going to be very hard work. I currently have trouble sleeping at night and usually fall asleep after the sun has started to rise because I get scared.

I had to do a list of my phobias for that therapy and just doing the list made me feel terrible. I also refused to take the list into my bedroom and I hate carrying it around, like it's going to contaminate my hands.

The thought of starting that therapy scares me, but I know it's for the best. I cannot always rely on roommates to change the bag in monster cans trash cans.

My job is going well. I missed a lot of days in the past few weeks, but I'm catching up this week and my work is getting done at a pretty good speed.

I must go shopping next weekend. I am in serious need of underwear, above all of the bra kind. A huge need of bras, you see.

Compost: A Brief Follow Up

Remember when I talked about compost? Well, here's a brief note for readers from Quebec, or anyone who can access the Protégez-vous magazine. In their May 2008 edition (not sure this is the right word, but you get what I mean), they talk about compost at home: different types of containers, what can and cannot be composted, etc.

My School Is Prettier Than Yours

I went to the cegep—that's college for you—today (Tuesday).

I had the stupid idea of walking from the metro station to my destination. As I said: stupid idea. The walk was much longer than anticipated and, because I have no familiarity with the place, I ended up going the long way. Long path + feet rather than bus led to my being very much in late, by about 45 minutes. As if it weren't enough, I was only 5 minutes before closure. Fortunately for me, though, the woman I had to meet did not actually finish in 5 minutes, so I could meet her...Much to my disappointment, I had been "summoned" merely to sign something. Great. Marvelous. About 1 hour and 30 minutes of subway and walk just to sign a bloody paper.

At least, it allowed me to see the area for the first time. Not only is there a bus going right from the metro station to the college, but it passes along a beautiful park. Trees, ladies and gentlemen, trees! I love trees.

The building itself is quite ordinary. Just a building, with windows, doors and that kind of stuff. The park, however, is very beautiful. There are also lots of trees on the actual lot of the college, which is awesome. Even the parking doesn't look too much like the classic ugly wide parking for well frequented buildings.

Yes, it was my first time going. Actually, up to about 10 minutes before sending in my admission request, I don't think I had ever heard about it. There are quite a few colleges in Montreal, and most of them offer the program I'm going in—it has some fancy and rather odd name for what it is, but is it basically computer programming.

I will admit it to you, whole world: I chose this particular college because it was the first one on the list whose site I could access. I won't go studying computer programming in a college that can't even make a Firefox-compatible website. ;)

Don't worry too much about the state of accessibility in the province though, it was something like the second on the list.
